Artemus Newton Thriller #4 set for a 2013 release

mock cover art for Artemus Newton Thriller #4

(actual cover art will be designed by Jeff & Michelle Cope, who did such outstanding work on SCOUNDREL)

Tonight I began the very early work on the next Artemus Newton Thriller.  It is to be titled KNIGHT and will be take place in the year 2014, about a year after the events of SCOUNDREL.  Am hoping to release this one in April of 2013.  The TAG for Artemus Newton's latest adventure will be:  "Army retiree Chief Newton has been on some bad  vacations, but this one is going to be his worst."

SO much work ahead to try to make this one as enjoyable and fun and suspenseful as people have told me that the other thrillers are.

I plan to contract Jeff & Michelle Cope of Columbus, Ohio to prepare the official cover art again.  They did such an outstanding job on cover art for the previous Artemus Newton Thriller.

Look for updates here and on facebook as work on this novel progresses.

One more Artemus Newton Thriller

Cover art for ACTIVE MEASURES, an entirely new series of novels scheduled to be written

after the next Artemus Newton Thriller is released later this year or in 2013

I've been contemplating writing another Artemus Newton Thriller before moving on to a whole new series of novels.  The original plan was to take a break from Artemus Newton for a year or so and work on ACTIVE MEASURES, the first in a planned series of novels about two special forces Soldiers set in the 1980s to be released in 2013 and then release the fourth Artemus Newton Thriller in 2014.  But, I think that I'll switch them around and give Artie one more battle against foreign agents, assassins, terrorists, criminals, and other adversaries before diving into the next series of books.  Have also been toying with the idea of writing some Bill Hennick Adventures, set in the 1940s and 1950s when the character that Artie meets as a 90 year-old nursing home resident in CHIEF is still a young man and a member of the newly formed C.I.A.

With the success of the last Artemus Newton Thriller, SCOUNDREL, and with the continued sales of the first Artemus Newton Thriller, CHIEF, I've got the incentive that I need to jump in to the hard work of writing and pump out another adventure for Artemus Newton to endure.  Artemus Newton is a fun character to put into tough and unexpected situations and see what happens.  I just have to start thinking about what the main story is going to be for the next thriller and a couple of secondary plotlines that will be occuring at the same time and then begin work on it.

Thanks to the many people who constantly encourage me as I write these novels.

Have a great weekend.

Grandma is coming

Moi, Newton the cat

Newton the cat here. I'm filling in for Roggie this week. Grandma
(Roggie's mom) is flying up here to Wisconsin on April 24 to baby-sit
me while Roggie drives all the way down to Hoover, Alabama for a few days
to celebrate his 50th birthday on the 27th. Grandma is so gracious and
has baby-sitted me many times in the last 12 and a half years. I will
take good care of her while she is staying with me.
Have a great weekend.

The first two reviews

Posted by Roger Blakely on April 4, 2012 at 9:10 AM Comments comments (0)

A very small percentage of customers who purchase books take the time to post a review.  I am always happy to read reviews from people who have graciously purchased my novels and have then written what they think of the books.  SCOUNDREL was released on March 24 and two reviews have been posted so far.  Check them out...

A review by a lady who obtained the novel at Smashwords.com:

Review by:  Sandra Scifo on March 30, 2012:  ***** (Five Stars)

I never thought I'd say it, but SCOUNDREL overshadows the previous Artemus Newton books, by not only the amount of characters, but that each character and surrounding situations were brought out in much greater detail.  I was beyond spellbound--I was mesmerized by this well-written thriller.  I highly recommend it.

A review by a lady in Flaviac, France who purchased the novel for her Kindle and then posted the below on Amazon.com FRANCE and is also posting on Amazon.com USA:

Review by:  Topaze  Je viens juste de commenter:  SCOUNDREL (The Artemus Newton Thrillers) de Roger Blakely www.amazon.fr ***** (Five Stars)

"Brilliant!"  I'm sad!  Yes, I'm sad because I finished reading Artemus Newton's adventures...I was waiting with impatience (for) the end of the trilogy.  I have not been disappointed!  This story is really exciting!  Bravo, Roger!!  I could say so much...Read this novel because all words can't sum up the end of this fantastic trilogy!  Artie, you're going to miss us..."

Have a great weekend!

from me to myself

Gave this to myself for an early birthday present.

If I make it to April 27 I will be 50 years-old.

Since I'm coming up on a big milestone of a birthday I decided to treat myself to a special present.  On Sunday I purchased a Kimber M1911 Crimson Carry II .45 semi-auto.  Kimber pistols have a laser sight built into the butt.  Pretty cool.  Looking forward to taking this fine weapon to the outdoor range next to Fort McCoy, Wisconsin when it opens up again on April 9.  Planning on blasting some pumpkins and other targets.  I'll also bring along my Cobra 9mm Derringer and fire that little peashooter too.  If you're ever up this way, give me a call and I'll take you to the range with me and we can light up some targets and take some good pictures and videos.

Have a fantastic weekend.

Project 2013

Posted by Roger Blakely on March 7, 2012 at 9:10 AM Comments comments (1)

Cover art for the novel ACTIVE MEASURES

Scheduled for a late 2013 release

The next writing project looks like it will be the novel ACTIVE MEASURES.  This one will be the first in a series of Dave & Bryan Special Operators Thrillers.  The two protagonists will be based on my late best friend, Master Sergeant David K. Thuma, who died during a special forces mission in Kenya on June 18, 1998 and on Dave's best buddy in the SF, Retired Chief Warrant Officer Four Bryan Hinkel.  The series will be set in the 1980s and early 1990s.  I plan to begin work on this project later this year, after the release of The Artemus Newton Thriller SCOUNDREL on April 27 and after I work on marketing that book for a few months.  ACTIVE MEASURES is going to take over a year to write and will take a lot of research and energy.  I am excited about this new project.  After ACTIVE MEASURES is released I plan to begin work on the next novel in The Artemus Newton Thrillers and release that in 2014.

Have a great weekend.

My two favorite cover arts for the upcoming novel SCOUNDREL designed by

Columubs, Ohio husband & wife artist team of Jeff & Michelle Cope

As of February 29 I am at 51,318 words in the first draft of Artemus Newton Thriller #3, titled SCOUNDREL.  Am on the way to at least 80,000 words for the final draft.  Writing a novel takes a lot of time and a lot of energy but I have had so many people send me encouraging messages via e-mail and facebook spurring me on to complete this book.  I've been working on the acknowledgements page as I write the latest in the Artemus Newton series and hope that the people mentioned there will know how much that I appreciate their kind words and encouragement.  It helps a lot, especially on days when I am too lazy to write, but force myself to sit behind the keyboard and knock out some more of the book.  Geraldine George-Batier, President of The Artemus Newton French Fan Club in the town of Flaviac, France and Rene Hinkel, from Fayetteville, North Carolina and Pam Stapleton and Ron Bowman from Springfield, Ohio and Sandy Scifo down in Arlington Heights, Illiniois have been especially encouraging to me as I work on finishing up this book for its scheduled June release.  Many other people have encouraged me too and their names will also appear in the acknowledgements page when the book is published.  For this novel I also contracted some professional artists and old friends from Columbus, Ohio to do the cover art.  My two favorite covers that they have designed so far are on this blog entry.  We are still trying to obtain permission to use the photo of the alpine house in the cover with with Gus the cat, since the picture is copyrighted.  Hopefully we can get permission from the copyright owner to use it.  It is a nice shot.  Jeff and Michelle have also added a picture of Gus, Artemus Newton's faithful cat on some of the cover art.  Gus, one of the sweetest cats ever, lived with Jeff and Michelle for many years until he passed on in 2011.  I met Gus in 2000 when I was living in Columbus and knew that I had to make Artemus Newton's pet based on the real Gus.

This weekend I plan to get SCOUNDREL up to at least 60,000 words as the novel winds down to a smash-bang climax.  Once I get to 80,000+ words I will then go into the extensive editing phase and work on plot hole fixing and some scene rearranging and deleting and maybe add some addtional scenes and do other work on the book to polish it up.

Have a fantastic weekend.

April 27, 1963 celebrating my first birthday with my Aunt Joyce and my Great Grandfather William Hennick

in Springfield, Ohio

April 27, 2012 is getting closer and closer.  If I make it to that date I will be fifty years-old.  So hard to believe.  They say that the older you get the more you repeat yourself.  I just scrolled down and saw that I blogged about turning 50 two weeks ago.  Wow.  Oh, well.  Still trying to decide what I will do during the birthday week.  Will most likely take a nice road trip down to Alabama and visit a bunch of places and people in between.  Have a great weekend.
